Ahead of our exhibition opening on Thursday I created a social media
event to publicize the show and allow both artists and curators to
invite people to see the result of all the hard work. I reworked the
images and styles from Tess' posters to create a social media banner and
also included the direct definitions of both Process and Progress to
serve as a description for the event and make the links between the
artworks and the theme more explicit.
If
we had focussed our exhibition around a central launch night there
would have been more to publicize, however for the requirements of
raising awareness for the exhibition a facebook event was still a very
powerful tool.

If
this were a commercial exhibition and there was a monetary motive, to
greater or lesser extent, we could then use this social media event as
an advertising tool, and 'boost' it with Facebook's revenue feature. By
combining an event with advertising it is possible to push the reach of
such an exposition far beyond only those involved, and reach receptive
audiences who may have never heard about such an event otherwise.
Social
media and advertising is an essential part of organising events such as
this, as the surrounding press holds a great deal of influence on
audiences, and whether or not they are motivated into visiting in
person. Although this is less the case in a closed institution like a uni, creating an event such as this still has an increased impact on social awareness and interest.
