The reliablity and scope of the mechanised printing press appealed to me, as I could see the sizes, detail and finish it could create. I found it tricky pushing down with enough force for an even print, however with practice I think this is something I could get better at. I wished I had arrived earlier to have an input in the layout of the screen, as I feel the way the triangles were arranged was visually uneven and could have been made more effective. I was also excited to then work back into one of my printed copies, as this was the first time our extension work could fully match our own practice without trying some experimental new concept.
When I returned home I also looked over the seminar powerpoint to catch up on any contextual links I had missed and was surprised to see US street artist Swoon among the names. (click here for accompanying research) I have already studied her extensively in previous projects however did not initially connect her with the COPY specification. As I then began to consider it further, this made me realise that much of my personal street work would also identify as COPY work which made me begin to reconsider my choices for the creative practice SKILLS unit in the new year, tempting me to lean towards Print instead of Painting as my primary choice.
I also finally completed my further development for OBJECT/EDIT in this week, compiling the videos I had generated in object into a composite film inspired by 'Everything is Everything', a video by Koki Tanaka which we were introduced to during the workshop. Click here to see research file for further details. I found that working with Premier Pro in my own time, without the constraints of having to appease a group, was actually a lot more educationally beneficial. I learnt how to use keyframes, which took a little getting used to, but once I understood I could see this was one of the fundemental tools for more advanced editing. I used them to pan and zoom in on both images and titles as a problem solving measure to still display the whole image even when some of them didn't fit with the dimensions of the rest of my film. In this film the clips had sound so I also tried some sound editing, raising and lowering volumes to my taste which I had not attempted before. I also feel that because this was the result of a well documented thread of ideas I had a lot closer idea of the concept I wished to express.
I used a song by The Noveltones called Left Bank Two as a backing track which many will recognise from the Art Attack TV Series and other creative connotations. I found this appropriate as it emphasised the nature of this workshop as creative exploration which, while not to be taken overly seriously, is still an interesting artistic muse.
Overall I am very glad I chose to revist EDIT when working on my OBJECT outcome as I feel like I made a lot more progression by furthering my work alone. I also am a lot happier with the effectiveness of this outcome than any of the sculptures and videos I created in Object/Edit as I was able to take a considered approach with a clear goal from the outset, unlike the workshop where I wasn't really sure where any of it was going until the end.
