I had to create a piece for a winter exhibition at Moosey Art Gallery, and chose to use my Drawing Machine from the first projects to create a background for the canvas. I didn't think too deeply over the concept behind this work, as it was mostly created to tight time constraints, to fit within a winter colour scheme and be an easily saleable piece however I really like the way the drawing machine created a completely unique and visually interesting pattern for me then to work over.
The only problem with this method was that because of the water added to the acrylic to allow it to flow through the hole, this element of the canvas took an incredibly long while to dry, to the extent where it became a bit of a worry for whether it would be completed in time. I must make sure to remember this if I plan to use my machine in future and either add a fast drying medium to the paint or plan ahead and lay down these elements onto the canvas long before the entire painting needs to be finished.
I think that as a way of creating visually stimulating backgrounds with just the right mixture of abstraction and structure this method is very effective but that with further development there is still more potential to be had. This painting features the Blue Pangan Poison Dart Frog, a frog known specifically for their bright warning patterns, matching an overall colour scheme of sky blue and bright red against striking white and black, aiming to be as visually eyecatching as possible to stand out against a wall which will be entirely filled with pieces of art for the Winter Showcase featuring pieces by most of the artists they have worked with over the year.
